Chasing Amy Banky and Holden
Banky's personality is not the really interesting stuff though. Plenty of mainstream movies portray guys who say those same sorts of things and act that same way. What makes Chasing Amy profound for gender/sexuality is its representation of the friendship between Banky and Holden.
Holden:   Banky doesn't hate gays, you know that.
Hooper:   But I do think he is a bit homophobic. And this latest episode between
                you and Ms. Thing has tapped into that. In his warped perception, he
                lost you to the dark side -- which is she.
Holden:   You make it sound like me and him were dating.
Hooper:   Don't kid yourself - that boy loves you in a way that he's not ready
               to deal with.
The claim from the first page of this section was:
Chasing Amy is fundamentally about love across categories (categories with lines that are supposedly never blurred or crossed).
In addition to "lesbian," Chasing Amy complicates the category of friendship. Holden could meet, date, and split up with someone in a few months and have had a "relationship" while 20 years with Banky would still be a "friendship." Chasing Amy challenges the designation of "friendships" and "relationships" along the basis of sex (male/female or male/male) rather than on the nature of our feelings for one another, male and female alike.
The "crazy ending" does not come out of nowhere in Chasing Amy;
The Holden/Banky plot is developed consistently (next):
