OK maybe not the most undebatable observations in the world... but I'm not claiming that crazy revolutionists sabotaged A&F with a weird subversive ad campaign. I think someone (granted, with a unique perspective) not only knows that these ads appeal to A&F's target audience but was able to convince A&F to go with (and keep) this theme in its ads.
A substantial amount of money is spent on that photography and A&F's marketing. A substantial amount of capital is tied up in the clothes those photographs are expected to sell.
Nothing is arbitrary in expensive nationwide corporate advertising campaigns. A marketing/advertising firm somewhere had to pitch this concept to A&F. The guys in those pictures are hanging all over each other because the shots were specifically composed that way, not because they just felt like it. They had to convince A&F that this photography would sell, and that it would attract their target audience.
That audience is straight-identified, and A&F would not risk alienating it. But it doesn't... for whatever reasons (not necessarily mine!) these campaigns appeal to it.
Stores don't plaster their walls with displeasing photography, it's not good for sales...
